Consolidated PBY-5A Canso, manufactured in 1944, by Canadian Vickers in Montreal and served with the RCAF until 1961. This is a flying version, part of a larger collections of war planes at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It is an amphibious aircraft and I am told by one veteran that one pilot radioed in during the war to land at a particular airport. He was told "You can't land here!" The pilot responded "Can so!" as his wheels deployed out from the sides of its body. It is said that this is how the PBY-5A got its nickname, the Canso. You can see the wheels in its side in this photo. When it lands on water, wingtip stabilizing floats drop down.
